I went into my September rehearsal with gnarwhallaby, I’ll admit, with a bit of anxiety. These guys are friends but also so incredibly talented (hear for yourself!). My piece started with essentially 7 minutes of whole notes. I was wary that they’d find it too simple.
They told me, in no uncertain terms, that playing in unison for 7 minutes is, indeed, really difficult to manage. This is the danger of writing with MIDI playback, kids. The machine will not mess up turning on and then turning off. It’s a tougher task for humans, which is what makes the humans more interesting.
In that spirit, I’m presenting three text scores as part of a concert of my recent work at the wulf. at the end of February. One has had a performance before (in a brewery, which was interesting). The other two are new. All of them have unison attacks, but what happens afterwards varies in each. 10 fantastic musicians have agreed to play, and I’m so excited to share this work with them and with you.
The second half of the concert will feature live, improvised mixing of field recordings. I’ve been working on this as a live set for almost 2 years, and I try to have mostly new sources every performance I do. Last time I presented this was last September in New York. It’ll be fun to do in LA again.
